In [Ni2L2(μ-SCN)2 (SCN)2] · 2H2O (1), where L = N,N-dimethyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)-ethylenediamine, the two Ni(II) atoms are bridged by two thiocyanate ligands in an end-to-end fashion. The crystal structure of [Ni2L2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] · CH3OH (2) involve two independent dinuclear [Ni–Ni] units, in which the N3- anions act both as end-on bridging and as terminal ligands. In [Ni2L2(H2O)2(μ2-C2O4)] · 2ClO4 (3), two Ni(II) atoms are bridged by a bis-bidentate oxalate dianion. Magnetic susceptibility data were fitted to give J = 3.90 cm−1, g = 2.03, and θ = 0.3 for 1, J = 1.91 cm−1 and g = 2.03 for 2, and J = −17.1 cm−1 and g = 2.00 for 3, respectively. These are characteristics of ferromagnetic interaction between the Ni(II) ions in 1 and 2, and antiferromagnetic interaction in 3.

Three dinuclear nickel(II) complexes of the tridentate ligand L (L = N,N-dimethyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)-ethylenediamine) with the bridging ligands of thiocyanate, azide, and oxalate dianion, respectively, have been synthesized, and characterized by X-ray structural analysis, magnetic measurement, IR and UV–Vis–NIR spectra.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
