In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes were combined with graphene oxide nanosheets in aqueous dispersion and then chemically reduced to form the carbon nanotube/graphene (CNT/G) composite as electrodes for capacitive deionization (CDI). The structure of the CNT/G composite was highly porous, with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) sandwiched between graphene sheets that functioned as spacers and provided diffusion paths for smooth and rapid ion conduction. The associated increase in the electrical double-layer capacitance enhanced capacitive deionization performance. The CNT/G composite achieved a specific capacitance of 220 F/g and an electrosorption capacity of 26.42 mg/g with 100% regeneration, showing great potential as a high performance electrode material in CDI applications.
