Spectroscopic properties of Ce3 +-doped BaO-Gd2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2 glasses

Ce3 +-doped BaO-Gd2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2 glasses with high density have been prepared by melt quenching method and the infrared transmission, UV-vis transmission, excitation, emission spectra and luminescence lifetime have been measured. The infrared transmission spectra confirm there are [BO3] and [BO4] units for the borosilicate glasses. A broad absorption band is observed and the UV absorption edge shifts to a longer wavelength with the increase of SiO2/B2O3 ratio and Ce2O3 content. It exhibits an intense blue emission peaking around 404 nm which ascribes to 5d-4f electronic transition of Ce3 + ion under UV excitation. The emission intensity decreases and the emission maximum of Ce3 + ion shifts to longer wavelength with the increasing SiO2/B2O3 ratio and Ce2O3 content. The luminescence lifetime of Ce3 + ion in the borosilicate glasses is in an order of ns, which indicates the potential applications of Ce3 +-doped BaO-Gd2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2 glasses in radiation detection.
