Wetting of polycrystalline B4C by molten Al at 1173–1473 K

The wettability of B4C by molten Al at 1173–1473 K was investigated using an improved sessile-drop method and the interfacial microstructures were thoroughly characterized. The strong temperature dependence of the wettability is essentially determined by the formation of various reaction products at the interface, which increases with the increasing ratio of B/Al in the resultant aluminum borocarbide ternary phases.
