The coupled amplitude equations of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers are numerically solved with the fourth-order Runge–Kutta formula and the characteristics method; the influence of the shape, energy and duration of injected super-Gaussian shaped pulses on time delay and pulse broadening is investigated. The results indicate that time delay and pulse broadening depend on the shape, energy and duration of the injected pulses. Maximum time delay and less pulse broadening can be obtained by optimizing the shape of the super-Gaussian shaped pulses; the maximum time delay and corresponding gain increase with a decrease of injected energy, and larger relative delay can be obtained by a smaller duration pulse. These results provide a theory base for designing novel optical communication or sensing components.
