The porous magnesium with novel pore structure was characterized in terms of damping capacities, compressive properties and energy absorption capabilities. The results indicated that the novel porous structure significantly affected the damping capacity of the porous magnesium materials. At constant porosity, the loss factor increased as the pore diameter decreased at room temperature; while at constant pore diameter, the loss factor increased as the porosity increased. The damping measurement of p-Mg with increasing temperature has also been carried out. The loss factor increased with increasing temperature, but little dependence was observed for the frequency. The porosity and pore diameter of p-Mg significantly affected the damping capacity-temperature relation. Two visible internal friction peaks were presented in pure Mg and p-Mg. The positions of internal friction peaks were dependent on porosity and pore diameter of p-Mg. The porous magnesium exhibited very good specific strength and high energy absorption capabilities per mass, which could be very promising damping materials for the engineering applications.
