To evaluate the alloy Ti0.3V0.4Cr0.3 as a candidate material for hydrogen isotope separation, the separation factor (αHâD), which is usually used to characterize the hydrogen isotope effects in metal-hydrogen systems, was investigated. We focused on the dependence of αHâD on pressure, deuterium concentration, and temperature. The results indicated that the dependence of αHâD on pressure was insensitive. However, αHâD decreased with deuterium concentration, and the dependence was characterized quantitatively. The dependence of αHâD on temperature was complicated. The experimental results agree well with the harmonic oscillator model (HOM) in 213 K < T < 773 K, but there were distinct differences between them in 77 K < T < 213 K. It is interesting that the value of αHâD was 2.31 at 213 K. Thus, the alloy Ti0.3V0.4Cr0.3 may be a hopeful candidate, or a potential substitute of Pd, for hydrogen isotope separation.
