• A new type of KYP2O7 has been prepared by the low-temperature H3BO3 flux method.
• It is the third phase of KYP2O7 named as r-KYP2O7.
• The luminescence of r-KYP2O7:Ce3+, Tb3+, Eu3+ has been investigated, respectively.
A new type of KYP2O7 was prepared by the low-temperature H3BO3 flux method. Different from the known ɑ and β phase of KYP2O7, this new r-KYP2O7 (P21/m, a = 7.052 Å, b = 5.660 Å, c = 8.930 Å, β = 108.5°) has a polyhedral assembly of 4- and 6-membered rings and K+ ions locating in the voids. By the doping of rare earth ions such as Ce3+, Tb3+ and Eu3+, a series of r-KYP2O7:RE3+ with different luminescent properties were also investigated. The results indicate that the boric acid flux method is a promising way to develop new phosphors, which may open a gate for the further exploration of novel luminescent substances.
