Needle-shaped, rod-shaped, and partial rod-shaped SrFe12O19 nanoparticles have been synthesized using the sol–gel method, in combination with the self-propagating combustion technique, by adding a little organic template (EDTA, molten stearic acid, or oxalic acid) as dispersant during citric acid addition. The morphology of the product was entirely different from the spherical nano-SrFe12O19 obtained when no organic template was added. Calcinated nano-SrFe12O19 has been characterized using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic properties of the products having different morphologies were tested, and compared using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The influence of the organic template on the morphology of nano-SrFe12O19 was also studied.
