Giant magnetostriction has been obtained in Tb0.36Dy0.64(Fe1−xTx)2 (T = Mn or Co) alloys over a wide temperature range from −80 to 100 °C. The results show that Co or Mn substituting for Fe can extend the operating temperature range for Tb0.36Dy0.64Fe2, due to the increase of Curie temperature Tc or the decrease of spin reorientation temperature Tr, respectively. In addition, the substitution of Co or Mn can partly compensate the magnetocrystalline anisotropy enlarged by increasing Tb/Dy ratio 〈1 1 0〉 and 〈1 1 2〉 grain-aligned rods of Tb0.36Dy0.64(Fe1−xTx)2 alloys have been successfully prepared. Giant magnetostriction higher than 1450 ppm has been obtained in the oriented Tb0.36Dy0.64(Fe0.70Co0.30)2 rod in 3 kOe magnetic field under 10 MPa pre-stress at room temperature, and can be kept over a wide temperature range from −80 to 100 °C.
