Magnetic and electrical properties of a novel compound U2Pd2Pb

A new uranium plumbide U2Pd2Pb has been synthesized and studied by means of magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements. The compound crystallizes with the tetragonal structure of the Mo2FeB2-type. It orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 65 K and undergoes a change to different antiferromagnetic structure at T1 = 20 K. In the paramagnetic region, the magnetic susceptibility follows a modified Curie-Weiss law with the effective magnetic moment μeff = 2.46μB per U atom. Above TN the electrical resistivity exhibits a Kondo-like behavior, whereas in the ordered state a pronounced hump in the temperature dependence of the resistivity is observed that likely indicates the antiferromagnetic unit cell being larger than the chemical one.
