• The SPTFE suspension was developed for the creation of protective coatings.
• Composite coatings were formed on Mg-alloy using PEO and electrophoretic deposition.
• Electrochemical and tribological tests were used for the investigation of properties.
• Composite coatings significantly reduce the corrosion current density and wear.
Using the methods of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and electrophoretic deposition, the approaches to formation of composite protective coatings on magnesium alloys have been developed in order to improve their corrosion resistance and reduce the wear degree. A complex study of electrochemical and tribological characteristics and morphological features of the obtained composite coatings on the magnesium alloy MA8 has been performed. It has been established that polymer-containing coatings reduce the corrosion current density by three orders of magnitude (I = 2.0·10− 10 A/cm2) and the wear rate by two orders of magnitude (1.2·10− 6 mm3/(N·m), as compared to the base PEO-coating.
