A computational study of slender axisymmetric bodies with tapered tails undergoing steady turning manoeuvres is presented. The computational modeling is based on the Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) equations and uses a novel hybrid meshing scheme designed to accurately resolve near field viscous flow features through systematic grid refinement. Turns with a range of radii 1.0
► RANS CFD study of submarine hulls in steady turning manoeuvres.
► Novel hybrid meshing scheme designed to resolve near field viscous flow features.
► Simulations include normal to extreme turning conditions.
► Full range of turning radii and drift angles relevant to a submarine considered.
► Detailed flow information and overall hydrodynamic performance provided.
