► A robust and efficient optimal sampling (JPM-OS) technique has been developed for shaping base flood elevation in coastal region. ► Piecewise multivariate regression splines are coupled with aspect adaptive sparse grids, based on virtual inundation responses. ► The “portable” technique produces inundation frequencies for SW Florida accurately and efficiently.
