Numerical simulation of flooding of a damaged ship

► A two-phase flow NS solver with dynamic mesh technique was applied to the damaged barge flooding. ► The effects of damaged opening and compartment internal layout were fully considered. ► The interactive dynamics between the barge and floodwater were analysed. ► The floodwater exhibited strongly non-linear and transient behaviour in the initial stage. ► The barge and floodwater became quasi-static in the intermediate and final stages.
