Indium selenide nanocrystals have been synthesized via a simple and facile way. Reaction temperature has important influence on the products. When the reaction temperature is low, InSe nanocrystals with zinc blende crystal structure are the product. When the reaction temperature is high enough, ZB-InSe transforms to hexagonal crystal structure In2Se3 (H-In2Se3). The molar ratio of precursors and reaction temperature have little influence on the shape and size of zinc blende crystal structure InSe (ZB-InSe) nanocrystals. Moreover, the optical properties of ZB-InSe nanocrystals have been investigated by UV–vis absorption spectrum.
► InSe nanocrystals with zinc blende crystal structure (ZB-InSe) have been synthesized via a facile and simple approach.

► Indirect band gap in ZB-InSe nanocrystals was calculated to be 1.75 eV.
