ZnO:Tb3+ nanotube arrays were prepared using anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) via electrodeposited method. The diameter and thickness of the ZnO:Tb3+ nanotubes are about 80 and 15Â nm, respectively. The XRD patterns indicate that Tb3+ ions may occupy Zn sites or interstitial in the ZnO crystal lattice. A discussion of the precipitate deposited on the AAMs was made. It can be concluded that the ZnO:Tb3+ nanotubes result from the decomposition of the mixtures of oxalates and hydroxides. The PL emission spectrum shows that a new UV emission band centered at 344Â nm emerges and the PL emission intensity of ZnO decreases with the increase of the Tb3+ concentration. Based on the results, an energy-level schematic drawing for the electron transition processes in the ZnO:Tb3+ nanotube arrays is proposed.
