The eigen-mode matching theory has been improved to be able to calculate not only the dynamic transmission coefficient but also the phononic band structure at the same time. The system with rectangle elastic isotropic lead rods embedded in uniform epoxy has been investigated as a practical example. The numerical results reveal that the method has a good convergency in calculating the phononic band structure and is also much more efficient to calculate the transmission coefficient. This new method can be extensively used in the propagation problems of the layered phononic crystal systems.
