Underwater neutrino telescopes

Neutrino telescopes use huge volumes of transparent material, such as water or ice, to detect high-energy neutrinos via the Cherenkov light emitted by charged secondary particles produced in neutrino reactions. The major physics objectives of these detectors are described and the status of current underwater neutrino telescopes is summarised. Finally, the ongoing work towards a cubic-kilometre size installation in the Mediterranean Sea is discussed.
