RPC present status and perspectives in imaging

The present status of the “trigger” RPCs, characterized by a 2 mm gas gap and plastic laminate electrode plates is reviewed for both LHC and cosmic ray physics applications. Particular emphasis is given to the system complexity and low noise operation. The problems related to the gas closed loop working mode are analyzed. New types of read out are considered in view of using RPCs as precision tracking or imaging detectors.
