E-beam crosslinked, biocompatible functional hydrogels incorporating polyaniline nanoparticles

► PANI nanocolloids were chemically synthesised in the presence of PVA and chitosan. ► PANI dispersions were transformed into hydrogel nanocomposites by e-beam irradiation. ► Characteristic optical properties of PANI were shown by the nanocomposite hydrogels. ► Absence of cytotoxicity for the nanocomposite hydrogels is demonstrated. ► Results encourage developments for application in biosensing and smart drug delivery.
