Theoretical study of the addition and abstraction reactions of hydroxyl radical with uracil

► First report of the theoretical study of reaction of hydroxyl radical with uracil. ► Explored the reaction mechanism with moderate computational methods. ► Decisive factor in the reaction mechanism is kinetic rather than thermodynamic. ► Hydroxyl radical additions are favored over hydrogen abstraction reactions. ► Results showed good correlation with reported pulse radiolysis data.
