► We review recent literature on coupled protein folding and binding reactions. ► We describe different kinetic mechanisms for folding coupled to binding. ► We discuss their consequences on the observed folding/association kinetics. ► We suggest experiments that can discriminate between different mechanisms. ► Experimental results on folding coupled to binding reactions are discussed.
