Choosing the Right Tool for the Job: RNAi, TALEN, or CRISPR

The most widely used approach for defining gene function is to reduce or completely disrupt its normal expression. For over a decade, RNAi has ruled the lab, offering a magic bullet to disrupt gene expression in many organisms. However, new biotechnological tools—specifically CRISPR-based technologies—have become available and are squeezing out RNAi dominance in mammalian cell studies.
