Novel natural genetic variation controlling the competence to form adventitious roots and shoots from the tomato wild relative Solanum pennellii

► We found six novel QTLs controlling in vitro organogenesis in tomato. ► Four QTLs are controlling competence for both shoot and root formation. ► We performed the creation of NILs harboring the novel genes controlling cell fate. ► Such NILs will provide for the characterization of genes controlling competence. ► Competence is a poorly known process with broad biotechnological applications.
