Vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for ternary systems of benzene + ethylbenzene, benzene + methylcyclohexane, toluene + methylcyclohexane, toluene + 1-hexene, toluene + cyclohexane, and toluene + ethyl benzene with ionic liquid of 1-methyl 3-octylimidazolium thiocyanate [Omim][SCN], were measured using headspace gas chromatography. The temperature was set at 323.15 K. The experimental data shows that the presence of ionic liquid improves the separation factors of these systems significantly. The VLE data of ternary systems were correlated using the Non Random Two Liquid (NRTL) model with a good accuracy.
► The effect of ionic liquid [Omim][SCN] on VLE of binary systems was investigated.
► Headspace gas chromatography was used for the analysis of the vapor phase.
► The experimental VLE data were correlated using the NRTL thermodynamic model.
► The NRTL model can correlate the experimental data with a good accuracy.
► [Omim][SCN] can significantly improve the separation factors of these systems.
