Virgaria boninensis, a new hyphomycete (Xylariaceae) from soils in the Bonin Islands, Japan

Virgaria boninensis, a new hyphomycete classified in the Xylariaceae (Ascomycota), was isolated from soils in the Bonin Islands, Japan. It is characterized by olive gray colonies and solitary, reniform, light brown sympodial conidia. Morphologically, the species is similar to V. nigra, but it is different from V. nigra in phylogeny and also differs with length of fertile part.

► Four Virgaria strains were isolated using a combination of agar plate and cellulose plate.
► Three of which belonged to a Virgaria boninensis sp. nov.
► The novel Virgaria boninensis produced a new compound.
