Interventions that induce modifications in the tumor microenvironment

Non-surgical cancer therapeutic strategies have focused primarily on direct killing of cancer cells by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the efficacy of these therapies can be significantly influenced by the tumor microenvironment. The microenvironment poses both obstacles and opportunities for new therapeutic interventions. New developments in this area are the topic of this review.

RésuméEn dehors de la chirurgie, les stratégies de traitement du cancer ont en premier lieu comme objectif l’élimination directe des cellules cancéreuses par chimiothérapie et/ou radiothérapie. Cependant, il apparaît clairement que l’efficacité de ces traitements peut être influencée significativement par le microenvironnement tumoral, qui peut à la fois présenter un obstacle et offrir de nouvelles possibilités pour les interventions thérapeutiques. Les nouveaux développements dans ce domaine sont présentés dans cette revue.
