Most of concrete structures deteriorations are due to the miss understanding of the concept of sulfate attack. Magnesium sulfate is more dangerous than other sulfates. Nowadays, it is almost proved that the use of silica fume has a bad effect on the durability of concrete to magnesium sulfate. This research suggests guidelines in compressive strength assessment of concrete modified with silica fume due to magnesium sulfate attack. These guidelines could be used to check the safety of any structural element subjected to any concentration of magnesium sulfate attack after any service time knowing the mix proportions of the used concrete mix. Application of these guidelines shows the hazards of using Type I Portland cement and silica fume in concrete subjected to magnesium sulfate attack.
► New proposed guidelines based on experimental work a long 2 years are suggested.
► Guidelines used to assess compressive strength due to magnesium sulfate attack.
► Properties of cement, w/cm and silica fume content are needed to use guidelines.
► Guidelines indicated hazard of using silica fume and Type I cement.
