This paper presents the effect of a surface-applied corrosion inhibitor on the durability of concrete by using capillary water absorption test, chloride penetration test, and accelerated carbonation test. Results showed that the inhibitor applied on the surface of hardened concrete improved the properties of water resistance, chloride resistance, carbonation resistance, thus the durability of concrete. However, the effectiveness of the applied inhibitor gradually decreased as water/cement ratio increased and as concrete density decreased.
► The effect of a surface-applied corrosion inhibitor on the durability of concrete was tested.
► Such inhibitor can inhibit the transport of aggressive substance in concrete.
► The durability of concrete was improved.
► Such inhibitor provides further protection for the steel bars in concrete.
