La contention physique est-elle prohibée en réanimation ?

Physical restraint is still in use in intensive care units to prevent falls and withdrawal of intravenous lines, drains, tubes and monitoring by patients themselves. It applies to agitated patients but may also favour the occurrence of delirium and agitation. It may dangerously lead to trauma and inhalation of gastric content, and can let long-term psychological after effects. Physical restraint is contra-indicated in patients treated by non-invasive ventilation. The decision to use physical restraint must consider the advantages and drawbacks in each ICU patient and it must be used in agreement with local predetermined guidelines.
