La pupillométrie permet-elle de mesurer la profondeur d'anesthésie ?

The pupil's area is related to the balance between the effects of parasympathetic (constriction) and sympathetic (dilation) nervous systems. Nociceptive stimulation dilates the pupil. Monitoring of the pupillary area may be a simple and sensitive clinical means to assess nociceptive stimuli under general anesthesia. The decrease of pupillary reflex response to light stimulation is proportional to the concentration of hypnotic under general anaesthesia. Testing the individual sensitivity to pain and opioïd before incision, and evaluating nociceptive stimuli during anaesthesia may allow to closely assess the needs in opioids during surgery.
