Mechanical trauma and sepsis are the main complication related to placement of central venous lines. Guidelines are required to prevent the occurrence of such complications. Central venous access should be performed through the right internal jugular vein and should be echo-guided. After three failed attempts, the operator should be changed. Sub-clavian vein is dedicated to long-term placement of catheters. Alcoholic chlorhexidine should be preferred for cutaneous desinfection, to povidone iodine.
