Undernutrition of patients should be identified before surgery since it entails significant postoperative morbidity and mortality. The aim of preoperative nutritional management is to optimize wound healing, immune, muscular and cognitive functions, as well as to improve patients well-being and decrease hospital length of stay after surgery. Since nutritional support is not devoid of complications, anaesthesiologists play a major role in deciding whom and how to treat before surgery and in anticipating the postoperative nutritional management. This review will consider existing guidelines and provide practical information on the preoperative nutritional management of the malnourished as well as the non-malnourished patient.
