The enhanced recovery after surgery programme decreases the duration of hospital stay and postoperative morbidity. An economic study performed in the Hôpitaux Civils de Lyon, sought to evaluate the cost sparing resulting from the decrease in the mean duration of hospital stay in abdominal and orthopedic surgical units. The cumulated cost effectiveness represented 200 K€ per year, i.e. 195 € per hospital stay for a little more than 1000 stays. From one unit to one another, cost effectiveness was different according to the capacity to increase the recruitment and the economic value of each stay. The next year, cumulated cost effectiveness reaches 288,000 euros.
