Gestion anesthésique périopératoire du patient tabagique

Smoking concerns 30% of the patients scheduled for anesthesia. Beside postoperative complications related to diseases induced by smoking (such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases), smoking addiction is a risk factor to other complications by direct interference to processes required for the success of surgery, such as healing and immune responses. Guidelines applicable by anesthesiologists during the preanesthetic consultation to achieve smoking cessation and to help patient to comply with, are introduced. The expected benefits of perioperative withdrawal of tobacco and their chronology are finally presented.
