This article is the result of a joint effort by a midwife and a sociologist. They wanted to go beyond the simple transposition of written analyses for other medical professions and, through a multidimensional approach, provide the premises for a sociology of the profession of the midwife. The students at the Nancy school for midwives demonstrate that opposing tensions and ruptures are inevitable in the professional socialisation in general and in that of midwives in particular.
