In diesem Artikel werden die Bedeutung guter kommunikativer Fähigkeiten verdeutlicht sowie Studien vorgestellt, in denen Möglichkeiten identifiziert wurden, um die Kommunikation zwischen Mitarbeitern im Gesundheitswesen und Patienten zu verbessern. Es werden die Gründe für den Mangel an „facilitative skills” besprochen und die Frage diskutiert, welche Fähigkeiten benötigt werden, um die Kommunikation mit den Patienten zu verbessern. Ferner werden Argumente für ein intensiviertes „facilitative skills post-training” genannt, und es wird diskutiert, ob diese Fähigkeiten in die klinische Praxis einfließen können und wie dies am besten erreicht werden kann.Schlussfolgernd wird folgendes festgestellt: Die Ergebnisse von Studien sprechen dafür, dass das Ziel eines Trainings der Kommunikationsfähigkeiten darin bestehen muss, das bestmögliche Outcome für Mitarbeiter im Gesundheitswesen und Patienten zu gewährleisten. Die Sorgen, Bedürfnisse und Präferenzen der Patienten müssen identifiziert werden, um den Mitarbeitern im Gesundheitswesen zu ermöglichen, Information, Beratung, Behandlung und Behandlungsplan auf die individuelle Situation des einzelnen Patienten zuzuschneiden.
