New EORTC guidelines for the treatment of anaemia in patients with cancer: Implications for nursing practice

SummaryAnaemia and associated fatigue are common problems in patients with cancer, and fatigue is considered by patients with cancer to be their most limiting symptom. The introduction of erythropoiesis-stimulating proteins (ESPs) has greatly improved the management of anaemia; however, many European patients with cancer-related anaemia are untreated because of a lack of awareness among healthcare professionals of the benefits of anaemia treatment to patients, or because of regional differences in treatment practices. Recently, the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) developed the first European evidence-based guidelines for the use of ESPs in cancer-related anaemia in order to facilitate and standardize the assessment and management of the condition. These guidelines, and the implications for oncology nurses in implementing them in practice, are discussed.

ZusammenfassungTumoranämien sowie die assoziierte Fatigue sind zwei bei Krebspatienten häufig vorkommende Komplikationen, wobei aus Sicht der Krebspatienten die Fatigue das stärkste Handicap darstellt. Dank der Einführung von Erythropoese-stimulierenden Proteinen (ESP) haben sich die Behandlungsmöglichkeiten der Tumoranämie erheblich verbessert. Dennoch erhalten in Europa viele Patienten mit tumorassoziierten Anämien keine adäquate Anämie-Behandlung, weil die Kliniker die Vorteile einer Tumoranämie-Behandlung für die Patienten unterschätzen und weil die praktische Anwendung von therapeutischen Maßnahmen regional unterschiedlich gehandhabt wird. Die European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) hat erstmals in Europa evidenzbasierte Richtlinien für die Anwendung von ESP bei tumorassoziierter Anämie entwickelt, um Evaluation und Management von Tumoranämien zu vereinfachen und zu standardisieren. In dem vorliegenden Artikel werden diese Richtlinien sowie ihre Bedeutung für die praktische Umsetzung durch das onkologische Krankenpflegepersonal diskutiert.
