Pregnancy, Poverty, and HIV

Compared with the rest of the population, women living in poverty are faced with many social inequalities that put them at risk for adverse health outcomes. This article explores the health care disparities experienced by low-income, African-American women who are living with HIV/AIDS and raising young children. A case study approach is used to heighten awareness among nurse practitioners about the challenges experienced by this group of women, provide a better understanding of the health perceptions and health practices of this population, and show how research findings can be used to inform practical clinical strategies that optimize health outcomes for patients.
