Accuracy of 64-Slice Computed Tomography versus Invasive Coronary Angiography in Diagnosing Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Invasive coronary angiography is the accepted reference standard for the assessment of coronary artery stenoses. However, noninvasive imaging techniques such as the 64-slice computed tomography (CT) are promising new methods in detecting coronary artery stenoses. This article reviews indications and benefits of using he 64-slice CT scan in detecting coronary artery disease and its implications for nurse practitioners in identifying patients at risk of coronary artier disease.
