From a nutritional point of view, soft drinks, due to their composition, contribute to the daily fluid intakes, in addition to fluid intakes from water and other beverages. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks also contribute to the intakes of sugars: between 1 and 10% of the total intakes of sugars amongst various age groups in France. Lastly, soft drinks are part of the few food categories that can exist in “without sugar” and “without calorie” versions, since it is technologically possible to remove 100% of the added sugar and replace it with intense sweeteners. This article gives an overview of the composition of soft drinks, their ingredients, and their contribution to nutritional intakes.
