Creating a Comprehensive, Robust Continuing Competence Program in Manitoba

Approximately 4 years ago, the continuing competence program (CCP) of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) underwent a thorough evaluation. As a result, the CRNM created a multifaceted CCP that reflects the importance of continuing competence in registered nursing practice. In addition to the original CCP's use of portfolios and clinical practice hours, the new CCP includes a jurisprudence learning modules component. Moreover, the CRNM now conducts a CCP review to ensure that registered nurses have completed the expected annual requirements and are maintaining competence in their area of practice. A multisource feedback and competence-based interviews have been added to the CCP review process. Using these tools independently is not new; however, using them together creates a more comprehensive program. This article reviews the CRNM's process in developing its new, robust CCP.
