The Use of Radiofrequency Ablation in Advanced Ovarian Cancer: Resection and Ablation of Liver Metastases

Metastases to liver parenchyma pose a challenge to cytoreductive efforts because of the high rates of morbidity and mortality associated with liver resection. The use of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in combination with liver resection has been successful in the treatment of colorectal cancer, but data on its use in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies is limited. We present 3 cases of recurrent ovarian cancer with hepatic metastases treated with RFA or partial liver resection with RFA. Radiofrequency ablation offers a way to circumvent many of the technical difficulties associated with liver resection, allowing for the safe resection of metastases that would have historically precluded optimal secondary cytoreduction.
