Calcium antagonists are a family of antihypertensive drugs that have been widely shown to have high efficacy so they are widely used. Prevention of kidney function deterioration should be a priority in the course of the hypertensive patient. This is especially important due to the growing prevalence of chronic kidney failure in the general population. The data available on kidney function and treatment with calcium antagonists in hypertensive patients both with normal renal function as well as with established renal disease show that calcium antagonists are effective drugs that should be considered preferentially as single drug therapy as well as in combination with another drug with the capacity to inhibit the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis.
