Managing the Infected Heart

Infective endocarditis is a devastating illness that is not easily diagnosed and treated. Blood cultures and echocardiography remain the key diagnostic tools; antibiotics and surgical interventions are the mainstays of treatment. Despite advances in medical and surgical care, mortality remains high. Critical care nurses play an integral role in the multidisciplinary team needed to limit complications and improve patient outcomes.
