Ectopic lingual thyroid tissue and acquired hypothyroidism: case report

Ectopic thyroid tissue with thyroid gland in its normal location is an extremely rare phenomenon.We present a case of a 38-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormone measurement revealed clinical hypothyroidism with elevated anti-thyroid antibodies, neck ultrasonography showed a small tissue with the characteristic of Hashimoto thyroiditis, while the scintigraphy demonstrated only a lingual thyroid.Treatment consisted in L-thyroxina replacement to the euthyroid state. We reviewed the literature with respect to the embryological background and the clinical management of such cases.

Un tissu thyroïde ectopique associé à une glande thyroïde dans son siège physiologique est un phénomène extrêmement rare. Nous présentons le cas d’une femme de 38 ans qui s’est présentée à notre hôpital avec des symptômes d’hypothyroïdie. L’analyse de la fonctionnalité thyroïde a révélé une hypothyroïdie clinique avec des taux élevés d’anticorps anti-thyroïde. L’échographie cervicale a montré un petit amas tissulaire ayant les caractéristiques d’une thyroïdite de Hashimoto, tandis que la scintigraphie au Tc-99m a montré une captation seulement au niveau de la langue.Le traitement a consisté dans le rétablissement de l’état euthyroïde avec de la L-thyroxine. Nous avons révu la littérature avec référence à la pathogénie et au traitement clinique de ce cas.
