Diagnostic mycology: Controversies and consensus - what should laboratories do? Part II

In Part II of this article, various facets of mould identification are discussed as well the use of sequencing for identification of not only moulds but yeasts as well. Importantly, an approach to fungal susceptibility testing is reviewed, as well as the various acceptable methods. Finally, other modalities for the laboratory diagnosis of fungal infections, including those that detect circulating antigen or antibody and nucleic acids, are discussed. We encourage laboratories to assess their current practices to ensure quality mycology services are provided to their patient populations, particularly in the current era of increasing clinically relevant fungal infections.
