Unsurprisingly, antibiotic resistance mechanisms are present in the environment of ancient human populations to whom antibiotic resistance may have been transmitted in the digestive microbiota as shown by the study of old dental calculus and digestive microbiota. The ongoing works of reconstruction of these ancient enzymes and their common ancestor aim to test the spectrum of activity and understand the mechanisms of evolution.
