Vaginal delivery is a common cause for anal sphincter tear. In some women, sphincteric tear can lead to anal incontinence, while others with the same condition remain symptom-free. Surgical treatment can restore sphincter integrity. Radiologists have a key role for the diagnosis and follow-up of these women. Endoanal ultrasound is a straightforward efficient method. Its high spatial resolution is optimal in assessing anal sphincters. Anal endosonography provides a precise diagnosis of the internal or/and external anal sphincter defect and contributes substantially to follow-up after an anal surgical procedure.
